Do you know that the pencil ‘lead’ is not made of the elements lead (Pb)? The pencil lead is made of graphite, which contains carbon (C) atoms.

An atom is too small to see. For example, if you make a dot with a pencil, the dot may contain up to 10,000,000,000,000 carbon atoms.

Define an Atom
An atom is the smallest particle of an element that can take part in a chemical reaction.

Although atoms are so tiny, scientists use some special instruments to see atoms.

Research
Use the library or the internet to find out what instruments scientists use to study atoms.

Scientists discovered that atoms consist of a nucleus and a cloud of electrons that whizz around the nucleus. The nucleus is made up of protons and neutrons.

Why do relative Masses have no unit?
The values of relative mass have no unit because relative mass is not the actual mass of the subatomic particles. Relative mass is only a comparison value.
